Things To Do
Aldermaston is a rural town, thought to have been inhabited as early as 1690 BC. Surrounding towns include Newbury, Reading and Basingstoke, each around 10 miles from The Hind’s Head. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful local countryside with leisurely walks or track cycling, or head further afield into the city for shopping and nightlife.
Wasing Estate has a thousand acres of woodland and lakes to explore, and is a short five-minute drive from The Hind's Head. There’s an abundance of paths and trails for hiking, dog walking and horse riding here, and its lakes and rivers provide plenty of fishing opportunities.
A 20 minute car journey south will take you to Highclere Castle – or as many know it, Downton Abbey, as it’s the setting of the classic British TV series. Dating back to around 749, there’s plenty to see and do at Highclere. The enormous, ancient trees in the immaculately landscaped gardens are a sight to behold, and the castle also hosts regular events.
Two National Trust parks, Basildon Park and Vyne Park can be reached via a short drive from The Hind’s Head. Children will love wandering the wild play trails, and Vyne Park also offers an indoor trail if the weather turns wet.
There’s plenty in the area for sports fans, too. Drive 20 minutes from the hotel to reach Newbury Racecourse, which holds racing and live music events. Golfers are well catered for, with Newbury & Crookham Golf Club, Bishopswood Golf Course, Sandford Springs and Wokefield Estate all within easy distance. Reading Football Club is also a 20-minute taxi ride or drive away.
